An undercover cop, disillusioned by the recent murder of his wife, is implicated in the murder of an officer and must struggle to clear himself.
LAPD detective Tom Ludlow is a ruthlessly efficient, unorthodox undercover cop. Captain Jack Wander always covers for Tom, as do even his somewhat jealous colleagues. After technically excessive violence against a vicious Korean gang during the liberation of a kidnapped kid sex slave, Tom becomes the target of IA's hotshot, captain James Biggs, who feels passed over after Wander's promotion to chief. Tom's corrupt, disloyal ex-patrol partner Terrence Washington sides with IA but is killed during a shop robbery in Tom's presence.
Not sure why KR always gets such a hard time from "serious" movie watchers, some sort of snobbery involved I think ;) He has great range and shows it again in this movie. Why he is pulled down all the time is beyond me. OK so we all have opinions, but man ...
This post says it all really about this film: "Over the past few years, the Action genre has continued to leave film goers mad. We have returned to what made this genre so appealing in the first place. We have returned to the time of classic cop thrillers such as Serpico and Chinatown. A modern day classic...Street Kings.
Do not miss this gritty story of a rogue cop who is pushed past his limits by corruption, greed and violence. Keanu Reeves plays the role perfectly in his stunning performance as Tom Ludlow. Forest Whitaker gives an awesome supporting performance as Wander.
Although there are a few rap artists in this film, they each play street thugs, which is not a far stretch.
The best film I have seen in theaters for a LONG time, yet I feel it will be overlooked by most.
Street Kings is an instant classic!!!! -Mike " Just KR's recent movies such as Constantine, Lakehouse, The Day the Earth stood Still and This movie, show a great actor, playing very differing roles.
The attacks on him seem so vitriolic, if you don't like him in movies, simply don't watch the movie.
'How lucky you English are to find the toilet so amusing. For we Germans, it is a mundane and functional item. For you it is the basis of an entire culture. Red Baron from Black Adder. Street Kings (2008)

Keanu Reeves plays a LAPD cop who gets caught up in a cat and mouse game of murder and violence. Reeves learns from his boss (Forest Whitaker) that a former partner has been turning over dirty details about him. When Reeves goes to confront the former partner, two thugs shoot the partner down so Whitaker must cover up the fact that Reeves was there because it would look like Reeves called out a hit on his partner. This here is where the trouble begins because Reeves wants vengeance for his partners death and soon he begins to uncover a dirty game of money and death. This film is a real throwback to the 1970s cop films because it's extremely violent, profane and politically incorrect. In the end the movie is good but I can't help think it could have been a lot better with a better screenplay to do justice to all the twists and turns in the story. The screenplay centers on the mystery of what really happened when the two thugs killed the cop but it's pretty easy to figure out what's going on long before they happen in the movie. I enjoyed the movie overall due in large part that it didn't try to play it safe and it didn't hide from the various race issues brought up in the screenplay including having Reeves a possible racist. The dialogue is very fast and sharp and again contains some politically incorrect talk, which isn't too common these days. Reeves turns in another fine performance as the down on out cop but he's so fun here that's it's easy to want him to find the truth. Whitaker delivers another very strong performance in his usual maniac style. The film features some nice cinematography as well as a great music score, which adds a lot to the heat in the film. In the end, this film is all about violence and being politically incorrect and if that's the type of action film you want then this one here should work for you. After all the actorly fireworks, Street Kings concludes that the LAPD is an institution where even the well-intentioned can't work clean. Okay. What else? Street Kings is based on a screenplay by screenwriters James Ellroy, Kurt Wimmer, and Jamie Moss. It is a Japanese phrase, normally used to address someone midday. The direct translation is "how is this day?" For evening, you would say "Kon Ban Wa". The character Biggs is captain of the Internal Affairs LAPD division. Ultimately his job is to uncover dangerous truths and do damage control through legal means. He is also passed up for promotion of Commander which went to the character of Forrest Whitaker. a5c7b9f00b
